Havana

Crumbling, withered, exotic

Embassy of the Republic of Ghana in Cuba

Inside “Colón Cemetery” you will find the biggest concentration of statues and funerary monuments in Cuba

The cemetery is expanded around two main avenues at its joining point make a perfect cross. It’s as by its luxury and its conception a small city of marbles, bronzes, angels and crosses, and as a diverse allegories who show the great imagination of the artists allowing to appreciate the dead’s social class as the acknowledgment they deserved by the people.

The most popular grave and obviously the most visited one, is that of Amelia Goyri de la Hoz, an upper class lady known at present as “La Milagrosa” (The Miraculous Woman).

Doña Amelia passed away in 1903 with 23 years old, and lived a life as a novel. After many inconvenience she had to wait for his father death to marry the man she really loved. But her happiness was ephemeral, because she expired a year later during the process of delivery.

The lady was buried with the dead child placed on her feet. The legend tells when the grave was opened some time afterwards the child was on his mother’s arms. Her desperate husband, José Vicente Adot, could not stand so much pain and went out of his mind. He went to the cemetery every afternoon and tapped the gravestone with the bronze knocker screaming: Wake up Amelia! Wake up Amelia!

He made this ritual for 17 years until he died. All this story of suffering made the romantic lady a worshipped imaged.

At present the image competes in terms of relevance with the saints and virgins of the Catholic and Yoruba religions.

On the other hand, the La Milagrosa receives more flowers and prayers than any other holy images, while the authorities of the Cuban church observe astonished in silent. Hundreds of people go to La Milagrosa to ask for their children or love affairs. Since ancient times the ceremonial includes tapping with the knockers as the insane husband did.

The visitors leave walking backwards to avoid turning their backs to the white statue of Amelia.

Havana Cuba

Old Havana is not only a legendary city, it is the Cuban capital!

Havana is a beautiful, special place. From the amazing Spanish colonial architecture of the Old Town, to the spectacular buildings of Havana Centro, a city of stalwart survivors and fantastic musicians. Havana remains characterful, safe, and packed with a plethora of interesting people. Havana is a city that makes you want to go back in time to when time seemed slower and the living was easy. There are old American cars, cigars and rum everywhere! You will see that live music is in every direction...this is many people's way of making their daily dosis of convertible pesos.

Enjoy and Have a great night!!!

Cuba...People, Places and Things!

We are back from Cuba!

Here are a few of the many, many photos I took in Cuba. I will keep updating the blog with some new pictures over the next week of the beautiful things we saw in Cuba. Everything is so fascinating from the people to the cars and scenery.

I shot a wedding while we were away as well...I will post some of those images real soon! Quiston and Susan return from their honeymoon as newlyweds tomorrow...YEAH!

I highly recommend Cuba to anyone that is looking for somewhere to vacation and visit!

I am very tired so I am off to bed I will add some more ramblings with my next post...for now here are some images for you to view...ENJOY!

I loved this picture...it's hard to tell by the photo but this is a father and son enjoying a game of baseball...in Cuba most of the children do not have baseballs or bats they play baseball with sticks and stones....we got off the tour bus to visit a cigar store/factory and instead of going into the place, I decided to wait outside to watch the people and view what was going on around the streets...I walked a little bit and looked down a side street where I saw the boy and his father happily playing...it was a real sight...one in which causes you to re-look at your life and truly appreciate all the things we have in our life...we are very fortunate and blessed to have so many things! The thing that got me most in Cuba was even though people did not have all the luxury items such as baseballs etc. was it did not stop them from having fun and enjoying life...people are carefree, smiley and very friendly....I hugged many of these people and truly enjoyed meeting each and every one...tomorow I will add some photos of a family that even invited us into their home...

The Joys of Boys!!!

Little Boys
Little boys come in all shapes and sizes,
Shy and adventurous, full of surprises,
With misshapen halos and mischievous grins,
Small dirty faces, and sweet, sticky chins.
They'll keep you so busy, and yet all the while
Nothing can brighten the world like their smile.
And no greater treasure has brought homes more joy
Than a curious, active, and lovable boy!

A Little Boy
If you have a little boy
All your very own,
Then you have enough and more
To make a happy home.

Friends fill your life with joy, your soul with sunshine and your heart with love.

Bell Gala Event

Ryan's work had a Reward Ceremony event at the Old Mill in Toronto last night. Before heading down to dinner I said "let me take your picture"...with a grumble he let me...LOL Of course the tables turned and he said "let me take your picture now" trust me, my grumble was even bigger...as I like to be behind the camera "NOT" in front!
It was so funny because he clicked the shutter many times so I said "ok let me take a look..." they were all blurry..hahaha, he wanted to try again, so I set the settings and let him go - the second shot is what he got...I wanted to delete but he said no...grrr so here it is a rare picture of me...my children do have a mommy, I do exist!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! These were the only pictures all night...I put my camera to rest!

Have a great evening!
